Wild Sheep, Goats & Muskox

These are the animals of cliffs, peaks and tundra: bighorn and Dall sheep with their curling horns, the white mountain goat, which is not a true goat but a goat-antelope, and the shaggy muskox of the Arctic.

Unlike antlers, their horns are never shed. They grow throughout life, and the rings on a ram's horns can be counted to estimate its age.

Bighorn Sheep

Ovis canadensis

The bighorn sheep is the heavy-horned wild sheep of the western mountains and desert ranges, found from British Columbia and Alberta south into Mexico. A mature ram's curled horns can weigh 30 pounds, and drawing a bighorn tag can take a lifetime, which makes the species as much a symbol of western conservation as a trophy.

Dall Sheep

Ovis dalli

The Dall sheep is North America's white wild sheep, a thinhorn that lives on high, dry ridges in Alaska, the Yukon, the western Northwest Territories and northern British Columbia. A full-curl Dall ram is one of the toughest trophies on the continent, and its dark southern relative, the Stone's sheep, is the other half of the thinhorn story.

Mountain Goat

Oreamnos americanus

The mountain goat is the shaggy white climber of the Northwest's steepest cliffs, found from southeast Alaska through British Columbia to the Cascades and northern Rockies. It is not a true goat but North America's only goat-antelope, and for hunters a billy in thick winter hair is a test of nerve and footing as much as marksmanship.

Muskox

Ovibos moschatus

The muskox is a shaggy Ice Age survivor, a stocky Arctic grazer more closely related to sheep and goats than to cattle. It lives on open tundra from Alaska to Greenland and is famous for qiviut, its incredibly fine underwool, and for the horns-out wall a herd forms against wolves. Hunting is tightly controlled everywhere it is allowed.
